ABOUT GELLI PLATE PRINTING

What you can do with

GELLI PLATE PRINTING

Gelli plate printing offers many advantages for artists. It is simple to use, immensely versatile and produces textures that are unique and never-ending. Very little special equipment is needed other than the Gelli plate and acrylic paint, most commonly. However, many mediums can be used.

ABSTRACT

Abstract art is probably the most satisfying go-to for the Gelli plate process

When using basic composition and good colour theory, compelling results come very quickly. Your own stencils and masks made from scrap paper and found materials produce unique results that look more creative than commercial stencils. Hand-torn paper, in particular, creates effective edges in designs.

COLLAGE

The Gelli plate process was born for collage.

By taking paint off the plate with tissue and paper to create textures and remove excess paint, 'scrap' mini works of art are produced—absolutely perfect for later collage work.

This floral design painting was made entirely from 'scraps'.

MORE REPRESENTATIONAL

For something a little more recognisable, place a loose background with one or two 'pulls'  from the plate and then start building up your subject with either stencils (paint into an area), masks (paint outside a shape), or, use your paintbrush to add more realistic touches.

Don't forget, after it has all dried, you can come back with more hand embellishments over the top.

As long as you have a basic composition in effect, and you have a decent colour theory/palette on hand, the result will be genuinely pleasing.

MODERN

As modern as anything in the Tate, printing techniques have always been a favourite.

Your Gelli plate 'ouvre' won't be left behind.

There are so many ways and means to produce texture and effects, some of which we experiment with in the class.

We do provide additional printed matter to give you suggestions and ideas. Get the colour right, and you are in business.

Charcoal Drawing…

Traditional drawing mediums.

Marker pens, Posca pens, printing ink, charcoal, regular pastels, and oil-based pastels. All of these and more are effective on a Gelli plate.

This means that if you do have drawing skills, you can use them to full advantage. In many cases, you sketch your subject on regular art paper and press that onto the plate, and the 'clinging' nature of the plate will accept a transfer of the medium. Then it is business as usual to continue.

And the Charcoal Transfer

The plate accepted the charcoal. Then, a suitable background colour and texture were created over the top, and when dry, the charcoal drawing was pulled off the plate.

Further layers could be added.

FABRIC PAINTING

Gelli printing is very adaptable. By using fabric paints instead of regular acrylic, T-shirts, cushion covers, sections of fabric for bags and quilts can all be done.

Fabulous one of a kind original designs that you create are straightforward to accomplish.

There is not much limit.
